The investigation into the death of Dr. Job Obwaka, a veteran gynaecologist and Chairman of the Board of Directors at The Nairobi Hospital, has taken a significant turn with the arrest of a person of interest.

Dr. Obwaka, aged 83, was pronounced dead on arrival at the facility on the evening of Friday, May 1, 2026, after collapsing in Kitengela.

The Arrest and Investigation

Police at Kilimani Police Station have detained Beatrice Wangare, a 45-year-old woman identified as a business partner of the deceased.

  • The Context: Wangare was reportedly in the company of Dr. Obwaka during a personal errand in Kitengela when he collapsed around 7:00 PM.

  • The Custody: She has been placed in custody as a “person of interest” to assist detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in establishing the sequence of events leading to his death.

  • Medical Context: While early police reports indicate the doctor had a history of underlying medical conditions, the case is currently classified as a “sudden death,” and a postmortem at Lee Funeral Home is pending to determine the exact cause.

A Controversial Final Chapter

Dr. Obwaka’s passing follows a turbulent final few months involving high-profile governance wrangles at The Nairobi Hospital.

  • The Dramatic Arrest: Just six weeks prior, in March 2026, Dr. Obwaka was arrested outside his surgery and detained at Muthaiga Police Station.

  • The Charges: He and other board members were charged with allegedly falsifying a register of members of the Kenya Hospital Association (which runs the hospital).

  • Health Decline: Former LSK President Nelson Havi and other medical fraternity leaders have linked the doctor’s deteriorating health to what they described as “state harassment” and “trumped-up charges” stemming from these management disputes.
