Kenya Airways has announced ambitious plans to raise $500 million in new capital by early 2026, a move aimed at upgrading its fleet and restoring financial stability.

The airline recently reported a KSh 12.17 billion ($94 million) pretax loss for the first half of 2025, compared to a KSh 634 million profit during the same period last year. Industry observers point to the grounding of three Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and rising operational costs as key contributors to the downturn.

CEO Allan Kilavuka confirmed that the airline will seek shareholder approval before finalizing the capital injection plan. The new funding is expected to help Kenya Airways modernize its fleet, expand routes, and improve competitiveness in the regional and global aviation market.

Despite current challenges, Kenya Airways remains optimistic about its turnaround. The national carrier previously posted a profit in 2024, largely due to favorable foreign exchange gains, proving that recovery is possible with the right support.

This $500 million raise marks the next chapter in the airline’s quest to reclaim its position as a top African carrier.
