The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project has reached a crucial operational milestone following the official deployment of 4,879 experienced business mentors nationwide.

Under the oversight of the Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, the mentorship phase serves as the direct follow-up to the disbursement of start-up capital grants to over 122,000 young entrepreneurs across Kenya’s 1,450 electoral wards.

The nationwide mentorship sessions represent a transition from financial capital injection to sustainable business development and capacity building.

The NYOTA Mentorship Framework

To ensure individual guidance and quality control, the State Department for MSMEs Development has structured the mentorship rollout with strict ratio limits and practical learning modules:

[ NYOTA MENTORSHIP PIPELINE ]

1. GRANT DISBURSEMENT ──► Over 122,000 Youth Receive Start-Up Capital

2. DEPLOYMENT ──► 4,879 Verified Business Trainers Deployed

3. MENTORSHIP STRUCTURE ─► Max 20 Mentees per Mentor Across 1,450 Wards

4. PRACTICAL SESSIONS ──► Site Visits, Coaching, Peer Linkages & Case Study

Max Ratio: Each deployed trainer/mentor is capped at managing a maximum of 20 mentees, guaranteeing structured, localized support.

Core Curriculum: The mandatory sessions cover direct business site visits, cross-peer mentorship, real-world case studies, tailored coaching, counselling, and market linkage creation.

Mandatory Requirement: Participation and completion of the mentorship phase are mandatory for beneficiaries to qualify for subsequent stages of government growth support and catalytic financing.

Next Operational Phases: AGPO and Apprenticeships

Beyond direct business support, the multi-agency NYOTA initiative—funded in partnership with the World Bank—is rolling out complementary capacity-building pipelines designed to integrate youth into mainstream economic supply chains.

Driving Sustainable Youth Enterprise

By pairing financial grants with strict, localized mentorship and skills development, the NYOTA Project addresses one of the primary vulnerabilities of early-stage enterprises in developing economies: the lack of operational guidance during the initial 90 days of business launch.

As thousands of mentors commence site visits and group coaching across the country, the program sets a benchmark for structured public-private youth empowerment in East Africa.
