Raila Odinga at the Centre of New Political Storm

Once again, Raila Odinga — the veteran opposition leader and one of Kenya’s most recognizable political figures — finds himself at the centre of a storm. This time, it’s not about elections, coalitions, or policy; it’s about his health.

Rumours began circulating online claiming that Raila was unwell and receiving medical attention abroad. The whispers spread fast across social media, fuelled by political bloggers and unverified posts. Then came Rigathi Gachagua, whose remarks about Raila’s condition sparked an even bigger debate — and furious reactions from ODM leaders.

“Who Told Him He Is Sick?” – ODM Leaders Clap Back

ODM leaders were quick to defend their party boss, accusing Gachagua of spreading lies for political mileage. Gladys Wanga, Rose Buyu, and Opiyo Wandayi were among those who dismissed the rumours, saying Raila was “alive, well, and stronger than ever.”

In fiery remarks, Buyu questioned Gachagua’s motives:

“Who told him Raila is sick? Why is he so interested in Raila’s health? If he wants to know how Baba is doing, let him visit him instead of making careless comments.”

Her words captured the anger felt within ODM circles, who viewed the rumours as a deliberate attempt to distract the opposition and weaken their unity.

Raila’s Camp: “Our Leader Is Healthy”

Raila’s spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, confirmed that the Azimio leader was in good health and currently in the United Kingdom for scheduled engagements — not medical treatment.

In a strongly worded statement, Onyango accused a section of politicians of using Raila’s name to remain relevant in the media:

“We understand some people have no agenda, so they cling to Raila’s name for attention. Baba is healthy. Let the Deputy President focus on fixing the economy, not manufacturing rumours.”

Gachagua’s Response: “You’re Overreacting”

Rigathi Gachagua, on the other hand, has denied making malicious statements. He says his comments were taken out of context, insisting he simply called for clarity to end speculation.

“I only said if Raila is fine, let him make a public appearance and silence the rumours once and for all. Why twist my words?” he told reporters.

But ODM sees it differently — to them, the issue is not concern but political intent.

Behind the Scenes: Political Rivalry Heating Up

Insiders suggest the health rumours are just the latest front in Kenya’s growing political war ahead of the 2027 general election.
Gachagua, now positioning himself as the central figure in Mt. Kenya politics, has increasingly clashed with the Azimio coalition.

Meanwhile, ODM feels cornered, with some allies in the opposition — especially Wiper Party under Kalonzo Musyoka — being accused of playing double politics. Kalonzo’s team has denied spreading any false claims, saying ODM is “paranoid” and afraid of losing political ground.

The Bigger Picture: Rumour Politics in Kenya

Kenya’s political space thrives on speculation. From health scares to secret meetings, rumours often drive national conversations — sometimes more than facts.

This latest episode shows how health narratives can be turned into political ammunition. In a society where leaders are deeply symbolic, even a rumour about illness can spark emotional and strategic consequences.

ODM’s fierce response shows just how sensitive the Raila brand remains — and how any attack on his image is seen as an attack on the movement itself.

“Baba Is Fine” – ODM Declares

In the end, ODM wants to make one thing clear: Raila Odinga is fine.

Party leaders have vowed to ignore what they call “cheap propaganda” and instead focus on national issues. “We are united behind Baba, and no amount of fake news will shake that,” said Wandayi.

As the political temperature rises toward 2027, one thing is certain — even rumours can ignite a storm when the name Raila Odinga is involved.
